Glencoe, a historic mountain-walled valley of the River Coe, is part of a designated National Scenic Area in Scotland. It has been the setting of many a romance since the 1886 publication of Kidnapped, in which Robert Louis Stevenson spoke of Glencoe's "prodigious valley, strewn with rocks and where ran a foaming river." The valley is also famous for a bloody scene of clan warfare in 1692.
